Established in 1974, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) provides consultancy and support services in the fields of coal and mineral exploration, as well as mine planning and design.

It is India's largest coal and mineral consultancy firm, holding a 61.0% market share in the fiscal year 2025, and serves as the preferred consultant for Coal India Limited. The company is backed by advanced infrastructure, enabling it to execute a wide spectrum of activities within the coal and mineral sector. As of March 2025, it operates one of the largest fleets of drilling equipment utilized for coal and mineral exploration in India.

Its facilities and technical capabilities allow it to deliver reliable and high-quality services across its various business verticals. The company has planned open-cast mines with annual production capacities of up to 85 million tonnes and depths reaching 420 meters, underscoring its capability to handle large-scale mining projects. As of December 2025, the company operates a network of eight well-equipped laboratories across various coalfields. These laboratories are staffed by experienced technical professionals specializing in coal testing and analysis, who support the company's exploration and quality assessment activities.

कंपनी नेशनल मिनरल एक्सप्लोरेशन एंड डेवलपमेंट ट्रस्ट के सहयोग से कोयला और अन्य खनिज क्षेत्रों में ड्रिलिंग और खोज की पहलों में भी सक्रिय से भाग लेती है। दिसंबर 2025 तक, इसने एनएमईटी को बॉक्साइट, तांबा और संबंधित खनिज, मैग्नेटाइट और संबंधित खनिज, तथा जस्ता और संबंधित खनिजों जैसे खनिजों के लिए ग्यारह खोज प्रस्ताव थे। इन प्रस्तावों में से छह परियोजनाओं को मंज़ूरी मिली, और मंज़ूर की गई परियोजनाओं में से चार पहले ही पूरी हैं।

The company also actively participates in drilling and exploration initiatives within the coal and other mineral sectors, in collaboration with the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust. By December 2025, it had submitted eleven exploration proposals to the NMET for minerals such as bauxite, copper and associated minerals, magnetite and associated minerals, and zinc and associated minerals. Of these proposals, six projects were approved, and four of the approved projects have already been completed.
