Anglo-Français de Petit Venerie, like many other French Scent Hounds, is a long-lived breed with a long history. The result of mixing the old Anglo-French Hounds with the Poitevin, Beagle, Petit Gascon-Saintongeois, and Petit Bleu de Gascon, resulted in hounds with a body similar to that of English Foxhounds and a head similar to that of French Scent Hounds. For centuries, they have been used mostly in packs and for hunting small animals, and many of their personality traits stem from this activity. Although used almost exclusively as hunting dogs in France, they are gaining popularity as show and companion dogs in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy.

They are friendly, sociable, and non-aggressive with humans, even strangers, and are considered gentle with children, even when raised as dogs. They are devoted and loyal to their families, especially to owners who train and socialize them. Their long-term intelligence, strong will, somewhat independent personality, and, like many other scent dogs, noses, can make them stubborn, making the initial stages of training best suited to an experienced owner. They are also prone to barking as they have been taught to inform their owners, which can be a problem in small living spaces such as apartments. Their hunting history also limits their ability to coexist with smaller non-canine creatures, as their hunting instincts can take over. Despite some shortcomings, they are a well-mannered breed that has gradually evolved from a traditional hunting dog to a family companion.
